Air Assist On/Off Issue ¦ powder coating paints

Its actually quite hard to set the powder in finer detail. I found that doing two shallow coats was better in some places.

Just a note on getting the powder wet. I did find that I needed to have my powder coat extremely dry. Any moisture can affect how the powder sets. It’s a good idea to try to keep the surface as dry as possible.

You may have better luck with a solvent . not metho/alcohol but acetone or xylene ..even petrol

I suspect this might make the powder slightly dissolved and stick together when the solvent evaporates. Interesting possibility!

I would use methylene chloride (“Reducer” at the paint store) [known carcinogen, use good ventilation !!!] for the solvent. It will even turn cured urethane to mush, is non-flammable, and evaporates extremely fast. The USAF uses it in flightline fire extinguishers.

P.S. You need to use Viton for any O-rings or seals in a sprayer.

Following your link… it’s the AI answer.. :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Methylene chloride is a volatile, colorless liquid solvent with a sweet odor, used in paint stripping, degreasing, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. It is highly toxic, causing cancer and nervous system damage, and the EPA is banning most consumer/commercial uses. Safety requires high-level ventilation and specialized PPE, as it is a severe inhalation and skin hazard.

Sounds like wonderful stuff… I think I’d steer clear of this if I could, just MHO.

I wouldn’t want to use anything that was flammable… Most solvents that are volatile seem to be flammable.

I worked with it daily for 5 years, 55 years ago. Warning then was the same. Break the rules and pay dearly.

It is the only solvent that is non-flammable. Acetone, MEK (methyl ethyl keytone), gasoline, kerosine, and so on are also known carcinogens, but none of those are being banned. They are just as dangereous if you violate safety protocols.

Methylene chloride disperses very rapidly, so you do not get local concentrations like the others. If you throw a cup of it on the floor, it will evaporate before you can get something to mop it up. You will only see frost where you poured it.

thanks for all the replies and suggestions
