I’m not able to get nodes to align horizontally/vertically in the latest update.

If you want to correct the note in the example shown so that the top line of the letter “A” is horizontal, it must be done manually. There is also the option to “automatically” align your A around this line, but then the whole letter is rotated.
The feature align objects, ie. paths, not nodes.
You can use guides to help you doing it manually.
You can do it the same way in LB as I just call it “manually” in my first answer. Select the node you want to change and drag it in the direction you want.
I don’t see what is different in affinity designer here. Your screenshot shows the same options that LB has as well…?
Seems Affinity Designer allows the use of the alignment functions with nodes.
The difference is that you can choose any node you want and align it any way you want, so you don’t have to adjust one node at the time.
