The thin aluminum surface in ordinary mirrors can’t handle the power density of an unfocused laser beam and the underlying glass typically isn’t intended for high thermal stress.

Laser-rated mirrors tend to be solid molybdenum or gold-coated silicon for high heat conductivity and stability.

Russ polished a set of brass disks and used them in his machine. They actually worked quite well for brass mirrors.
