Breaking a file down into layers

I would like to learn how to separate an existing file into layers. Specifically, I’d like to take fire department patches and be able to separate them into separate layers so I can make a 3D piece of artwork.

The problem with doing patches, is they have a very low resolution which makes them more of a problem.

Add to that when you enlarge them enough, these defects really show.

I’ve done a couple, using the trace image function, multiple times on the same image to get the best possible results for a vector file. Most of these required some low level, node manipulation.

As a suggestion, ask the people you wish to supply the finished product if they have an original artwork, such as they use for the city. This will save you lots of effort and produce much better results.

As long as you’re not going to make money off them or do something they think could be derogatory, they usually will give them to you.

Good luck.
