Connection Lost......or something like that

Longer Ray 5, 10W:
I have had a number of episodes where my laser will stop in the middle of a project, usually one that is an hour or more. That renders all the work it has done useless. The error message is something like "lost signal’ or something like that. I changed the USB ports & changed the cable from the Ray5 to the computer. That did not make any difference. Today the laser stopped in the middle of a project. On the Ray5 the RED light was OFF but the BLUE light was still on and the laser was burning a hole through my project… a fie was inevitable if I was not there to catch it. An additional point, using Lightburn, I initiated a STOP command. The laser did not turn OFF. My question is: is it the laser module or the control panel of the Ray 5 or lightburn? Either way something needs to be fixed.

These problems are almost always due to USB communications problems or power problems.

For reference, the Troubleshooting guides:

If the USB cable is longer than a meter, then that’s typically part of the problem. Anything over two meters requires a powered cable, ideally with power injected at the laser controller end.

Buying a known-brand USB cable with ferrite cores on both ends from a reputable seller (not one also offering swimware and jewelry) seems to improve the results.

Assuming it’s that machine, then the 10 W laser head draws something like 60 W from the power supply. If you’ve been using the machine for a while, it’s entirely possible the power cable from the supply to the laser head is failing and causing an occasional glitch as it flexes, typically where it meets a fixed object or clamp.

Messages in the Console may indicate either a complete reset or a communications problem.

If the controller disconnected, Windows assigned a different USB port when it came back, and that USB port wasn’t selected, then LightBurn cannot communicate with the controller.
