Corner Radius Issues with New 2.2.02

I have created this ‘Item’ using 2 ‘Polygons’, One Rotated by 30’ and then used ’ Boolean Assistant ’ to get this Shape … I have JUST Downloaded the ‘Latest Version’ … ???
All that I want to do is to Radius the Corners, External and Internal ones …
I have tried Everything that I can think of ??? Looked on the www and can’t find a Simple answer … “Shape Properties” doen’t come up with any ‘Radius’ Options as per the Net Search
I find the ‘CAD’ functions to be Super Frustrating and Not ‘Intuitive’ … :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:
Looking forward to hearing back from Someone that knows a Lot more than myself …

Hi @KiwiKeith

Shape Properties has only ever offered corner radius on basic shapes like rectangles and polygons before they’re converted or combined. Once you Boolean them, the result is just a path made of straight segments, so the radius option disappears. That’s expected behaviour, not something that changed in 2.0+.

To round corners after a Boolean, you’ll need to use Offset Shapes with “Round” corners, or switch to Node Edit and convert sharp corners into arcs.

You mentioned this happening right after updating — did you see a tutorial or screenshot that made it seem like the option used to be available on Boolean shapes? That will help us understand what led to the impression it changed.

Can you Radius the corners before you Boolean.

The Radius tool should do that:

I have that toolbar along the left edge of the LightBurn window, so it’s near the bottom on my screen.

Depending on how you generated the figure, it may be a group, so you must ungroup it before rounding the corners:

Keep in mind that LightBurn is not a CAD program and does not pretend to be one. If you think of it as a laser-specific CAM package with some drawing functions, you’ll do your blood pressure a big favor.

Searching the doc for various keywords often turns up the tool / function / operation your CAD-trained fingers cannot find:

Some folks with deep muscle memory find it easier to:

  • Design using The Best CAD Package Ever™
  • Export the geometry as a DXF file
  • Import it into LightBurn
  • Do the CAM thing: set the Line and Fill layers as needed
  • Fire The Laser

I created the polygon, using 6-sided with a second one rotated 30 degrees. Then I made a second copy of both.

First one, used the Boolean Assistant to merge them into the 12-pointed figure. Then I applied the Radius Tool to 4-5 corners to demonstrate that this works.

Second one, I used the Trim Shapes (Scissors) Tool to remove line segments as needed, leaving the same design. Then I applied the Radius Tool to 4-5 corners to demonstrate that this works, again.

In neither case did I need to Ungroup the two hexagons to radius the corners.

HINT: When using the Radius Tool, make sure the corner node being targeted is in the middle of the Radius Tool pointer circle. Took me a while to realize that. :flushed:

Thanks, I Got it to work , Such Great input from ALL, Much appreciated… Cheers from ChCh, NZ

Thanks for your Input … And YES, I do agree that the ‘Primary Function’ is NOT to be a CAD Program …
I am 74 years old already and Over Many, Many years I have taught myself AutoCAD and use an OLD ’ LT ’ Version for most of my ‘Hobby Stuff’ … The ‘Drop-Downs’ and Functions are Super Intuitive and easy to work around … Hense the Frustration …
There is Yet Another Super Frustrating bit of ‘Grammar / Termininology’ that I find wrong … In the " SHAPES " ‘Dropdown’ … The word ’ Polygon ’ is Incorrect … " POLY " meaning " MANY "… IF that Term is to be used, then there should be a Prompt for " How Many Sides " … The Shape shown is a " HEXAGON " …
While I am busy with the ‘SHAPES’ … There should be ‘CIRCLE’ … AND an ‘ELLIPSE’ … ‘CIRCLE’ will ‘AutoLock’ Both Axis, where ‘ELLIPSE’ should be ‘Varied’ … Yes I know that one can ‘LOCK’ the Axis additional ‘Key-Strokes’ … Why …
LIGHTBURN as a ‘Controller’ is Brilliant ( I am from a CNC Machining Background ) … I have Now resorted to ‘Drawing’ more Complicated ‘Shapes’ with ’ The Other CAD Program and then Importing it back as a dxf … Frustration Elininated …
Best to ALL from ChCh, NZ Look froward to your Comments on the " POLYGON "

That’s in the Shape Properties for that polygon:

Reviewing the Shapes doc will orient you in the New Land:

You draw an ellipse directly from the Shapes menu. If you want a circle, hold down the Shift key to lock both axes. Use the Numeric Edits toolbar to get a specific diameter or lengths along each axis.

Look at it this way: right now you’re in Year One with LightBurn.

There’s plenty of learning ahead!

Running through the First Project will introduce the tools and reduce your frustration:
