Cutting a trace out but not etching the inside

Ok, i have this trace i did from a image from a pdf. Its a single trace. What i would like to do is have the laser cut the shape of the ship out but etch the rest onto the wood. How do i accomplish this becasue it seems that when i try to cut, it cuts it all, nut just the outer edge

thanks

Move the outer edge to a new layer.
Set the inside to fill and the outer layer to cut.

thats the issue, its a single trace so i do not know how to move just the outer edge. I cant ungroup (right click ungroup) it or break it apart. I cant select just the outer edge without it selecting all of it
OHHHHHH, maybe my tracing tolerance is to low and thats why i cant ungroup it??

I think i got it. Now, how do i know which order lightburn is going to do? i dont want it to cut first then try and engrave after there is a hole in the wood haha.

thanks

Always run preview preview to see what the machine is going to do.

Preview will save you time and frustration.

Just make it a habit to check the preview before wasting material. It only takes a few seconds.

This would look really neat as an inlay… Here’s a video on inlays by Trotek laser.
