Just purchased the OMTech Maker ZF3551-130 it has the dual laser function. I saw that at one time there was a question on how to optimize your work space without using the second laser and I was looking for some more clarification on how to do It! Or how other people have handeled it! The dual laser will be great for most of my work but every so ofter doing something bigger than half the size of my work space would be nice!
Hello,
It looks like both laser heads are attached to the same belt and motor and therefore, one would need to be detached (parked) in order to use the full workarea with the other head.
I’m not aware of a feature in LightBurn that would allow you to use the whole workarea by automatically switching between the two laser heads.
Does RDWorks do this?
In consultation with the team, you cannot automatically switch between heads in a single job.
To use the whole workspace, you’ll need to loosen the thumb screw holding the second head in place, then slide it down until it’s right next to the first head.
Then enable the first head only for a job that uses the whole workspace (You will still need to figure out the max travel on the X axis with the second head all the way up against the first).
We have these docs on Dual-Head laser setups:
We might need to ping @omtechlaser for official instructions.
We’d be happy to help! I would assume you could slide the second laser head over to whichever side you’re not wanting to use, and resize your document settings or bed size in LB to maximize the space without the other head in use. BUT i will ask tech support right now to get a direct answer for you and report back with what they say.
From our main tech support specialist, " So he needs to physically remove the laser head everytime, and this will void his warranty. But he can do that, one of the laser head(I remember should be the one on the left), this head should be clipped on the gantry bar, so it will be easier to be removed.
Once the head is removed, he need to change the bed size in Lightburn and disable one of the head in Lightburn Machine settings so the machine will only fire from one tube."
Thank you @omtechlaser
Is the right head possibly locked to the belt with a thumb screw that can be loosened?
You would then fix it right next to the other head or slide it to the right side and not fix it to the belt. Then, disable Laser 2 and add the additional workarea in the controller and Device Settings.
Can you confirm that it’s necessary to physically remove the head (take it out of the laser) and that this voids the warranty?
You could also let the Laser 1 run the first half of a design and then use the 2nd head to run the 2nd half using two layers.
It would not split it automatically, and would need to calculate a very precise Laser 2 Offset.
