Engraving offset mid-job

I was working on a project, was about 5 hours in, and this happened (see picture) The Engraver offset about 6mm and continued on, ruining the job. Has this happened to anyone else, and does anyone know how to prevent it.WIN_20210323_18_26_34_Pro

I had something similar happen to the Y drive on my Artur laser, it turned out to be the belts slipping a tooth part way through a job.

As Akeckamb said it could be a belt slipping a tooth, or a stepper motor skipping steps.

Yes I think everybody who has had a machine for awhile has had it happen to them. The short answer on how to prevent it is most likely slow your acceleration settings down a little, and keep your machine clean and well maintained/tuned.
