Erratic Behavior for Boolean and Offset (A bit of a rant)

This is how you upload a lightburn file to the forum…

Did you group the notches before trying to remove them from the rectangle? If not, then what you are experiencing is expected behavior.

This video might help you a bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTYixcObMuU&t=1s
as might this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51cXqmNHgeI
and our documentation: Modifier Tools - LightBurn Documentation

I do these simple operations on a daily basis, on Mac (from 2014) and Linux Ubuntu, (on a nearly 20 year old PC).
Nothing has gone into pieces of the Boolean Operations in conjunction with LightBurn updating, but you will find out when you have reinstalled 1.4.xx.

I’m not saying that Boolean Operations are the absolute perfect tool, but it works for the tasks for which it is designed, you just have to learn how to use it properly.

Is there a reason that selecting two items and pressing Boolean Subtract on the left has a different result than through the assistant?
BooleanAminusB
Creates this:

The same action and the desired result is obtained within the assistant and is inverted from the side panel labels.

Yes, it’s usually the selection order, which I can’t tell from your screen shots …

I you use b - a you get a different result than a - b.

As Jack writes, it depends on the sequence and there “should” actually be twice as many buttons. But desktop space is very limited, therefore… If you have activated the wrong button, undo and press the same button again, you will actually get the opposite effect.
It’s not quite optimal, but a compromise, I think. I stick with the assistant which almost meets my needs.

I just tested that… Wow. Def. would not have thought to try that. “clunky, sub-optimal, compromise” all fair descriptions there.

The link someone sent to the documentation page will be very useful for many questions. I had checked the webpage documentation but I guess did not navigate through the categories correctly.
I went again this morning to try and find it on my own and couldn’t immediately find the path there, I had to go back to the link and follow the category tree, but now I know it’s under “primary docs>user interface>tools and wizards”.

I like this software because it’s not all froo froo “user friendly”, it’s designed by an engineer, for engineers, please never change that. I guess it bit me on the website, didn’t quite recognize “primary docs” even though I should.

One thing is for certain - it’s not because of the newer version. You were absolutely correct.

I have two main shapes here. The larger one can still be manipulated. The smaller one on top cannot. I am unable to even use the node edit tool.

This is going to result in a bunch of little bits of wood that cause a number of problems. Including: Fire hazard. (The one thing that Oz takes way seriously).

Unfortunately, I cannot look at your file because I am on a business trip to Germany and will not be at the workshop in the coming week. I wonder if there is something else that will look at the challenge.

I appreciate your time nonetheless.

It turns out, that shape is not closed. I remembered the tip to set to fill and noticed this right away.

I’m not sure how it became unclosed, maybe I used break apart at one point.

No closing or joining options are available. Node edit is not available. Selecting a start point does not show anything, change anything, ctrl+click to reset default changes nothing.

I did end up eventually just re-tracing the shape with new rectangles manually. I’m not sure why that shape has obtained whatever properties it has. Would love to know!
As we’ve established, it is almost always user error, the software usually works as intended, whether or not the user understands that intent.

Edit: BTW, the only reason I mention fire hazard and Oz is because I’ve also spent the past couple weeks trying to get an Arduino with GRBL shield and ESP wifi to work with lightburn. Not because I want to be remote, but because the only spare laptop I have is a chromebook. Using remote desktop I can be right there with the machine and not drag my desktop around.

Every single time someone mentions a wireless connection, the response is an emphatic “no, never, as difficult as possible, don’t burn your house down”. Well…

That’s also the circuit board I am working on - a breakout board for ESP8266 to an Arduino. NEVER to be in the other room! Specifically to be at the machine, in a safe, well ventilated area.

Not really… they sell a wireless interface … it is specific to the Ruida, which uses UDP/IP

I have run this for a couple of years and I work with Lightburn from inside my home via wifi, and the OMTech is in the garage…

A grbl machine has a serial connection and the data is streamed. Working like I do, it would be a problem to send the job, if in sending, the laser started the job unattended.

Probably the big difference is that I send my file to the laser, then go out and run it. Although I can supposedly run a job from Lightburn, without being present, I run them from the console of the machine.

Because of safety reasons. If the garage is open, there are lots of animals around, wouldn’t want to harm any critters. I’ve found pole cats (skunks), coons and cats in there… so far not in the machine…

Your application of a wifi connected machine, actually being in the same room is understandable. Since it’s serial, it must stay connected during the job…

I would hunt around on the Internet for software that uses something like the ESP32 to just make an IP → usb type connections. Seems I’ve seen similar diy connections. Some are also bluetooth…

This is a Chinese plug for one of their boards… multiple operations, but similar.

Good luck

It looks like your shape is grouped. You can tell by the dotted lines when selected.

Try ungrouping it, then trying again.
