Evgraving on glass

Can someone guide me with what I need to consider
when engraving on glass.
I have a J Tech 44W Laser

Visible light lasers, well, really no laser works on materials that allow the laser energy to pass though, such as glass and acrylic, in this case.

You have to use the indirect method of coating it with something that will allow you to heat up with the laser and that causes the glass to shatter or be damaged.

People use tempera and other kinds of paint to accomplish this. Some use a spray on paint, then lase it and remove the paint leaving the TiO2, where it was heated, bound to the glass. This is pretty much the Norton Tile Method (NTM). You can search through this site for lots of threads on this. You might like the results better than just causing damage to the glass.

If your glass is black it would likely work. How well, I can’t say as I use a co2 for this type of work.

@jkwilborn is 100% correct. When I laser glasses or bottles, I use a bold black dry erase marker. It seems that just about any coating that blocks the light will work. I found my choice was based on the cleanup work required when finished.

Cold galvanizing spray works, also. Cleans up with water and scrub. One pass leaves a black mark, multiple passes leave white marks (on MY machine with MY settings).

Flat-white paint/mix with TiO2 gives black markings and dark paint/backing gives frosted white. Combine the methods and get two-tone markings…
