Fiber laser - What is causing this "residue"/texture?

I have never been able to figure out what is causing the very persistent texture around parts that have been lasered away. Especially around lettering and edges of raised parts, some sort of textured area stays no matter how much I run my wire brush over it, polish it, burnish it etc. It does not happen in larger open areas that were lasered too. Attached a photo!

Anyone got a clue what this could be?

Maybe another larger photo so we know what we’re looking at, that indicates where the anomaly you’re seeing exists?

Might add what lens/power and settings, please include interval. Do you have any kind of air assist or vacuum for debris removal? Also detail your clean up pass and how often if you’re using this.

If I’m understanding you, I think it’s likely that you’re welding the debris back to the metal. I use the aquarium pump that came with my co2 laser for airflow. If you get deep, this becomes a problem, that is, getting the debris out.

With the little detail you have given, it will be one or more of the following:

Poor power, frequency, pulse width, and speed settings

Poor timing, delay, and jump settings

Poor image/depth map quality

Poor quality material

Poor or no air assist and/or extraction

I think you are talking about the texture in the deeply etched background, correct? And you want it to be as smooth and shiny as the polished raised letters and leaf? Or at least smoother then what you have here, almost looks like a sand casting? Please post your parameters and machine particulars, power, lens size, etc. Also hard to tell, is this just vectors or depthmap?

Is it just the heat-affected zone you’re seeing?
