File deletion help

I’m not sure what to do because I was working on a file for a little while and I had not saved it but I left the file open so it would not delete, I didn’t touch the software for a weekend and now the files deleted. I cannot find it in recent files either, I updated lightburn before and now it’s gone and I really can’t lose the file as it has hours of work on it

Windows is notorious for rebooting itself to install updates without warning and, depending on various settings, can re-open programs when it starts. If that happened while you weren’t paying attention, it would explain the data loss.

A lesson I learned the hard way, long ago: always always always save the file before leaving my battle station every time.

Ctrl-S is your new BFF.

That’s something you should never ever do  As Ed mentioned, that’s a hard lesson now. Pressing CTRL+S should be done every couple of minutes  I do it after every major change in a file.

Doesn’t activating the “auto save” function prevent this from happening?

I don’t know if that one works if you never saved the file first. At least, I would never rely on that  Even using Office 365, I know that all changes are auto-saved after each change, I click on the save-button once in a while, just to be sure

Per the doc:

Auto-saves are stored in the same location as you saved the original file, with _backup appended to its name. If you’ve never named a file, the auto-save will be in your computer’s Documents folder.

Whether anyone would recognize the significance of that request (I probably wouldn’t), remains unknown:

LightBurn untitled autosave

For sure, I’ve never noticed files like this before deliberately crashing LightBurn just now: AutoSave_314a.lbrn2

It is clear that I have never been a victim of this problem. :innocent: :grinning:
But I’m going to start taking it into account.

Better to be safe than sorry.

I think I’ve been through something like this before. However, the file was recovered without any problems.
(Well,… my version of LB stuck at 1.4.05… :innocent:
