Focus For Ceramic Tile

Good morning, is there a tutorial or video available on the correct Focus or how to focus when engraving on ceramic tile.
I have a Falcon2 40w.

When etching ceramic tile, I back up my focus [unfocus] approximately 3mm. This gives a wider dot etch on the tile. I have a 33W output diode laser, Atomstack X30. I coat the tile with cold galvanized compound. Initially I used a 6" sq. tile as a trial and error tile - utilizing different speeds, power, and focus adjustments. Suggest you do the same - as the results can be different for every laser - even if the same model and power. So doing this you’ll have a specific set up for your laser. Hope this helps.

Ok thank you.
I have non glazed tile, ordered wrong tile, will they work? How will i treat them, meaning pre paint etc.

Unglazed tile is a different bird. With glazed tile, without any treatment or coating, I use my X30 utilizing a higher power and slower speed. Again, trial and error with a tile that you can use for testing is best. This way you can use different settings and see which comes out the best. If you coat the glazed tile with, say flat black paint, when you etch the tile it will simply cut away the black paint leaving a whitish type background, sort of a reverse image where you would have the black background and the etched area in white. Unglazed tile will absorb any coating so a thin light coating is always best so your laser can etch through it. With glazed tile, I simply coat it w/cold galvanizing compound and just etch it with my laser. Again, I used one extra tile with all different settings and power to find out what was best. Also unfocusing gives you a wider etch dot area. Search YouTube for unglazed tile etching and engraving, even though you can’t engrave a tile you can only etch it. Hope this helps.

Perfect, thank you
