Grid Layout size millmage

will the grid ever be changed to the bed size like in Lightburn? it’s nice to know where on the bed the project is and maybe go to a coordinate system? probably a premature question as I just started millmage today

You can view both coordinate systems within MillMage.

Here we discuss the Machine Position vs. Workpiece Position in MillMage:

And here we get into options available from the ‘Go To’ tab, where you can flip between the two:

As for setting up a workspace grid matching your machine size, you can set the project size to be the bed size, but then the Preview could be much larger than required in the simulator. Another consideration — working in Absolute coordinates is much less common in CNC routing than it is in Lasers.

One can set up a project using the bed size and save that as a template for use when that workflow fits the need. Below I show a template file that is a mock-up of the entire 4 X 4 bed of an Altmil, complete with slots and hold-down receivers, set to Tool Layers.

Label me as one of the exceptions. My CNC history is as a maintenance tech in a machine shop under a 20 acre roof. The norm was Absolute Coordinates and Gxx offsets. Our engineers learned the hard way our CNC machinists were not all were coordinate savy. One newbie engineer was one mistake away from geting fired because he programmed in Incremental and told the machinist “The program is fine. Just push the start button!
