Grouping and Ungrouping

I must admit that my brain does work different than others. I am just asking if someone could give me the reasoning of these 2 icons. Maybe it will help me see the light.

The way I look at it is backwards from the actual function of these icons.

When I look at the single figure, to me, it should be the grouping icon since there is only one of them.

When I see the 3 figures, to me, this would be ungrouping as there is now more than one item.

Can anyone explain the reasoning for why they are the way they are??

Just asking.

Perhaps something like this:

  1. On the left, there’s a group
  2. On the right, there’s only an individual, no group

But like all icons, this is abstract and arbitrary.

Ahhhh, the old reverse psychology thing.
