If you can burn a rectangle than the laser is running correctly as it seems. You then need to check why image engraving does not work. There are two major causes:

1. gcode clustering turned on but your laser doesn’t understand it
2. I lately had an issue with a new laser where I needed to toggle the constant power option in detailed layer settings for the image. Maybe check this out as well.

My guess is a bad homing switch or connection to it.
What is the homing cycle actually doing? It should rapid into the switch, back off and then creep back to the switch.
