How do I get the CO2 laser to not engrave specific colors

I have a CO2 80W laser. I have several images that are black and white. I want to engrave the white and not the black or I want to engrave the black and not the white, when inverting. Everytime I do this on the laser it fills in the background. I also have a fiber laser and it just cuts the image not the background. I assume it is a setting or something I am missing… any help would be appreciated.
