With that setting enabled, you shouldn’t have that crash any more, even if you update to a newer version. There were a few other people having the same issue you were, so I added that switch to tell the software to use a different way of browsing for files, to get around the crashing component in your system.
The welding thing is simple: Group your two circles together, then select the text and the pair of circles and click “Boolean Union”, not weld. The post and video describes why they work differently in detail, so it’s worth watching.
