I have a laptop that has died on me. I cannot get on all. Screen remains black and only a series of tones sound when I start it. So I need to remove my license so I can install it on a new laptop. I have the license on three machines and my problem is how do I ID which laptop is the dead one. The laptops are ID’d with names such as this: LAPTOP-CFI1JUA4. Can this ID be found on the laptop? If so where do I find it?
You can’t on the dead computer. If they are all windows the names for the good computers should be in the system settings. Copy the names down and remove the one you didn’t see.
Thanks Jeff, I will give that a shot. I knew I can’t get the ID off the dead one. But it sounds simple enough to do as you suggest.
Is the series of tones the ‘Happy Windows Start Music’?
Plugging a monitor into the laptop might offer results.
The monitor hinge on Laptops often offers a pinch-point to break the ribbon cable.
If you haven’t already, try increasing the brightness on the display. I’ve accidentally had a couple of incidences where I’ve dimmed my screen to complete darkness and couldn’t figure out what was going on… more than once so take that for what you will.
A while back… PC’s used to emit tones to tell you what failed on the boot…
Wish that was the problem but it is not.
That laptop is running windows 10. Is there someplace to find those tones?
What happened is my small dog decided to jump up in my lap without warning. When she did the laptop fell off my lap and crashed to the floor. The screen at first had a lot of colored horizontal lines then went black and has stayed that way.
The tones you speak of are probably what’s known as ‘beep codes’. These are generated by the BIOS and not Windows. Different manufacturers have their own beep codes so you’ll need to research the beep codes for your specific computer.
Hope this helps.
Not the typical computer crash
@Marcus_Wakefield, glad you remembered…
Hopefully the info will help the OP
It does, thanks!
