How to position items for engraving?

Noobie here…

I have a Creality Falcon2 5W and want to engrave some round anodized aluminum tags. I would like to be able to setup a template board where these tags will be laid out and then setup my Lightburn to do a QR code in the center of them. Then, I’ll turn them over and run another round with text on the reverse.

Can anyone give me some pointers on how to setup Lightburn to be able to help me do this efficiently? Can i make the ruler in Lightburn more granular

I’ve done a test with a single tag to see how the engraving would do but had to position it manually.

  1. Use Absolute Coords. Having Home switches helps a lot here.
  2. Make sure your laser frame and base are fixed in position.
  3. Make sure you can locate a sheet of 1.5mm or 3mm plywood repeatable in position on your base. I use 2.8mm Baltic Birch for my dogtag fixtures.
  4. Now you make the fixture…
  5. In Lightburn, design the hole(s) to hold the tags. If I will be doing front and back, I would create 2 holes. Be sure to add extra notches so you can get them out when done.
  6. Locate your ply and burn the holes. Also mark it so you can orientate (rotate) it into the proper position.
  7. Save this file as the template master. Now save it as your Dogtag Fixture file. This copy is where you will be putting your QR Code and text.
  8. Glue the fixture to a base sheet of ply the same size so the tags do not fall through. This makes your master fixture.
  9. You now have a fixture and a design file that perfectly match. It is up to you to make sure you put the fixture in the correct place.

Have fun!
