How to segment a part of something off

rose to seperate 1 pic only
rose to seperate 12pic only
I’m doing an inlay. I need to separate a leaf from the branch so I can cut it separately. I have to draw a line across the open section just below the leaf to close it. I’ll need to be able to ungroup it and cut the leaf out and then re-group again. What is the process for doing this seemingly simple task?

NODE EDIT is the tool for this exercise.

Insert a node where you need to break the line.

Break the shape apart

Grab the nodes and reattach where you want.

I like to work on FILL mode, so when a shape is complete, it will fill in with a solid color to let me know it is a closed shape.

I have a line across the space but it still will not separate the leaf from the branch. It will not ungroup from the branch.

Gimme a minute to get some screen grabs from the desktop

No need to regroup at the end, start by doing a copy of your shapes and when you need it you have it.

    1. If your shapes are closed, set them to fill.

    1. Draw a square set to (T2) around your leaf
  • image
    1. Select your shape then Ctrl select the square and use the Cut Shapes tool ( the shapes remain closed).

    1. Set to line if you wish/need.

I was unaware that if it’s set to fill it will close shapes and line will leave them open.

Thank you, very nice of you to take your time to help. I never thought about making it a tool. I’ll go give this a try and report back.

It worked , however it leaves both sections open. If I use edit node on both separated pieces I will end up with a line across my image, I think. Did you go back and connect the nodes to close the shapes again? Or what?

Ungroup leaf and stem.

Grab leaf

Edit nodes

Insert node on one side of open gap

Grab last one and move to close the gap

Hover over the matching node on the other side of the gap to get them to join.

Before using the tool you have to set shape Layer to Fill, so that the tool keep the shapes closed.

Great that worked! Thanks again I think I’ve got my head screwed back on straight or should I say re-grouped LOL . Have a great evening. I’ll be posting this on my [Atezr 24 and 36 watt L2 Laser Engraver] (Redirecting...)
