Image burn is terrible looking

I have a png logo, it burns fine in the xtool software as a jpg, used the png file for light burn and looking at the software it shows correctly, but the burn is terrible. I’m very new to this software, so it could easily be a setting I’m overlooking.

Rough pine board is terrible to laser. The density of the wood and water content will vary widely in the grain.

You will have much better control of the engrave if you change the .png raster image to a .svg vector object.

Use the TRACE command on the image to get a vector.

FWIW check this picture.

xTool believes that their laser engravers should operate in the mm/second range.

Generally, mm/minute is a more realistic range for engrave speeds.

It’s easy to overlook this and engrave 60 times faster than intended.

This would be the first thing to check, then we’ll look at other things.

why would the burn create such a large amount of distortion?

what would the suggested burn speed setting be to not cause what happened?

Do a material test found under Tools for your specific laser to get the optimum results.

It varies greatly from machine to machine.

The Material Test that @StevenM recommends is absolutely critical to success.

Testing on inexpensive materials to develop a basis of comparison is also useful.
