Is laser speed quicker on diagonal cuts as both X and Y steppers are moving?

I had a response back from xtool support overnight…

“Sorry, there is a problem with beveled edge cutting in this version of firmware, we are fixing it urgently”

They also provided a bin file to revert so I’ll try that over the weekend

For me this raises even more questions. I’m curious if this is just a translation error or something else. I could see how something like “angled cut” could get translated to “beveled edge cut”. But if that’s not the case then I’m curious what they have in mind.

It’s not going to be quicker in real life. X axis is MUCH lighter can therefore go slightly faster still and acceleration of X axis is MUCH faster too. If you use both for scanning you are most like to see a slight slowdown or no change.

I would expect the speed is the actual “dot” speed. Consider cutting a circle. The dot should move at a constant speed, with X & Y constantly changing speed to result in a circle.

Yes, xtool sent me an older version of the firmware that I installed yesterday. I’ve confirmed back to them that with that version the dot speed is now constant. The diagonal of the triangle now takes 1.4 times longer than the other two sides.
Both lightburn and xcs now take 34seconds on my test cut.

I’d lay money they thought they were building a clean-room version (*) of GRBL, but the intern hacking out the code didn’t know how G-Code is supposed to work and skipped the whole speed computation thing for simplicity.

It’s an obvious error that nobody out here should encounter.

(*) That’s the charitable view.

I asked Xtool support the question over the weekend and got this reply.

*“…, the current blue laser head temporarily does not support M3 constant power, only red laser head support, …”

I’m not sure how long ‘temporarily’ will be! Given the significance of this I’ll post it as a new topic so its not lost in this one for others
