K40 with Monport Nano too powerful

Please help.

I have installed a monport k40 board and even at the fastest speeds and lowest power the engrave is crazy deep.

Seems to be running at much higher power than it should be. Can anyone help ?

You need to be careful what your 100%-level is. In your settings, the s-value max is 1000, which it is in LB as well, most likely. That means that 100% in LB sends 100% power to the tube, which is usually way too many amps to the tube. There are a few options.

First, check the maximum recommended amperage for your tube. This is usually around 14mA for a 40W tube.

  1. Check which percentage in LB is equal to 14 mA. This might be very different, e.g. 40% or 60%. Then treat this as your maximum and never exceed it.
  2. In addition to 1, you can use this maximum (let’s assume 40%) and set the s-value max in LB device settings to 400 instead of 1000 (do NOT change the firmware value). Then you can use 0-100% in LB, which equals 0-40% in real power.
  3. If you have a manual poti on your control panel, make the laser put out full power (either with LB or the test button) and reduce the current to 14 mA. Then you don’t need to change any LB or firmware settings and 100% output in LB is maxed to 14 mA for the tube. This is how I did it with mine. For me, this is most convenient.

Yeah I’ve never run it at 100%
Sadly though it seems to always put out way more power than I am asking for. It does seem to be a common thing with these boards as they are power locked. If I try and change the PWM $33 from 1 to anytjingtjing it just reverts itself back to 1 straight away

Are you sure this is what that parameter means? My Sculpfun lasers report that as 1500, which would be right for a diode. a “1” that cannot be changes suggests the manufacturer used that one for something else.

I realize this may be an exercise in futility, but you might try contacting the manufacturer.

Yeah sadly not getting any response from the manufacturer. I was told that $33 was for PWM. But now wondering if the relevant spindle control settings might be it instead. I have also ordered a different control system so will see what happens. Sadly I am getting nowhere with this current board

Probably not, but you might raise the $31=10 becaise the CO2 laser will not fire below that.

You said you ran at max speed to reduce the burn. I see your $110=8000 seems low for a CO2 laser. My 40w diode laser (huge module) is factory set at 20,000mm/m, so you might try increasing your posted speed limit.

You do realize you will be starting over with an undocumented path? You are trading problems for a lot more problems. If you did order a Ruida board, there are people here well experienced with Ruidas on CO2 machines. Good luck!

Yes. I saw that speed I’ve tried increasing that to 32000 and it’s still the same. I did manage to reduce the power ( barely ) by lowering the s value. But this had to be at 10 for it to be closer to what I would have imagined it should be. And even then it’s still engraving really deep.

Are you saying you increased $110 & $111 to 32000 and increased the Cuts speed to 32000, and it had no effect?

If this is true, you have something else going on. I think tube output power is controlled by varying the current. This would point to the power supply and whatever is controlling it.
