Laser photos takes very long

I turned the unit on with it in the home position if that matters

This shouldn’t necessarily matter if things are setup correctly.

Does your machine home automatically when first turned on? If so, the laser head should move rapidly toward the home switch locations, hit the switches once, back off slightly, reapproach the switches at a lower speed, activate the switches again, then back-off a little bit to stop at its final resting position.

Homing fail. Cycle failed to clear limit switch when pulling off.

This is basically saying that even with the pull-off that the limit switches were still being triggered. This could be a one-time thing or caused by something else that happened to be going on. If it continues you can tune the pull-off distance with GRBL configuration $27. Specified as distance to pull-off in mm after homing.
