Lightburn connect to offbrand K40

Hey, trying to connect an off-brand K40 for a friend. It’s GRBL. He’s using a Mac, I’m a Windows guy, so there might be something I’m missing there. It connected for me just fine on my computers using a pretty standard GRBL setup. But when I connect with his computer, the console just says ‘waiting for connection.’

What I’ve tried:

  1. Find My Laser (never works for me anyways)
  2. Connecting via Serial USB
  3. Different GRBL configs (M3, etc.)
  4. Custom Gcode setup with different baud rates
  5. Imported the GRBL code that was working for me into his Lightburn.
  6. There was only one COM channel available so I didn’t do anything there.
  7. Changed USB/printer cables.
  8. Restarting Lightburn multiple times
  9. Yes, the laser was turned on.

Questions:

  1. Is there a driver that I need to install on his computer? I don’t remember having to do that for me, but maybe I’m crazy.
  2. He downloaded the most recent version of Lightburn and I’m using a slightly older version. Would that matter somehow?
  3. He’s using Core instead of Pro Lightburn. From what I understand GRBL is fully supported on Core, right?

Let me know what I’m missing and other things I might be able to try, thanks!

Late model MAC with USB-C ports instead of USB-A?

Modern Mac OS has the driver installed from factory.

Many have found connection problems with Mac and their laser to be an issue with how MacOS translates, or rather doesn’t translate the onboard USB 3+ to the USB 2.0 of the laser. The most common solution seems to be using a "dumb: USB 2.0 hub connected though a Lightning adapter. Faulty, cheap USB cables are another source of problem for Mac and PC users alike. Get a high quality USB cable, with the ferrite core on the ends and a USB 2.0 hub and see if that solves your issue. This video will help diagnose if your Mac sees the device and offers a couple suggestions if it doesn’t.
