I was trying to navigate a hardware issue when my mom followed a LightBurn startup guide and tried making a new connection with our laser engraver, removing the previous connection I made in the process. Now it won’t connect, with the “already in use?” error message popping up. How do I fix this?
You have to select the correct com port in Lightburn laser window.
Usually with Mac you get better connection if you connect trough a cheap USB2.0 hub.
It’s not showing COM ports, I had to connect it by trial and error. The one that connects it is now displaying the “already in use?” error, and I saw it before, when I tried to make a second connection to the same laser engraver, but it would only connect to the first connection I made. Now, that first connection is gone and LightBurn is still acting like the laser engraver is still connected to something.
If you disconnect the USB cable wait a little then reconnect does it work?
No. I read from another post that I might be able to get it to connect if I reboot the computer and open LightBurn first, but there was no further feedback on that post so I don’t know if that worked or not.
You may give it a try, maybe that can solve some COMs conflicts.
Also you can power cycle the laser and only connect after Mac is on.
I tried rebooting the computer, it didn’t work.
I tried that dropdown box, but it wasn’t showing any COMs. Again I had to select each one to see what connected. Two of the options just said “waiting to connect” and nothing else, the third one is giving me that “already in use” message.
Read these posts please, maybe can help.
The first one I am having trouble understanding, it seems like they weren’t paying any attention to how the sentences flowed as they typed them. But from the gist of it, it seems like they were unplugging certain parts of the laser engraver to see if they can get it to work, and while it might help address my other problems with it, I don’t see how that would help with this particular problem. The second one was more understandable, but I am having trouble navigating the computer systems to check out what they are saying because my mom is on this computer more than me and I can’t find what he is talking about.
The first one is to check if the laser is seen by the Mac OS.
We have to wait from someone with a Mac to chime in.
With the USB Cable unplugged, on your Mac, go to Settings> General> About, scroll to the bottom and click System Report.
On the left side, under Hardware, click on USB. Take a screenshot of that page.
Connect the USB and turn on the laser, if nothing changes automatically, type ⌘ R to refresh the page. You should see something new. That is your laser and the port it’s connected to.
Take another screenshot.
Back in Lightburn click the dropdown @parsec highlighted above and with all items showing take a screenshot.
Upload all screenshots here for us to see.
I’m not finding settings, I’m finding system preferences and trying to follow what you said, but I’m not finding what you’re telling me to look for.
Preferences>General>About Scroll down to bottom and click on System Report button.
Will bring up this page, click on USB
I’m not finding the About in General. I’m working off an iMac 27”, does that help?
macOS 11.7.10
Let’s try getting there this way. Click on the Apple menu, hold the option key and click on System Information.
Ok, I’m there…
