Monport K40 not showing anything on the mA meter

My Monport K40 will fire when I hit test, but when I attempt to run my beginner Lightburn project, the machine acts like it’s engraving, but it doesn’t burn anything and output is 0 mA. When it does its little practice run, it will read about 8 mA. The wood has no marks at all. If I hold down the test button, it will burn into the wood below.

My Omtech k40+ will do that if the water flow isn’t adequate.

My water chiller says “normal”, but the meter on the unit does not reflect anything.

You need to ensure S-value Max is the same as the $30 value stored in the controller. I think Lightburn defaults to 1000. This controls how the grbl is sent and how the machine understands it.

Might want to follow the grbl setup for Lightburn in their documentation.

I also have the same CO2 laser. I realized after one or two days that the only time that the laser will actually cut or engrave is when the cover is down. If the cover is up and you wear glasses it may look like it’s working - but it’s not. The only time my laser will cut or engrave is when the cover is down.

These could or may be wired to use the cover signal wired to the P terminal of the lps. This would not allow the lps to fire the laser if it’s not low, showing a closed lid.

Of course the controller doesn’t know, so it runs the rest of the mechanics as if it’s working.

I removed mine as my lid is always open when I run jobs. That’s the only way it get good air flow.

Jack, I don’t understand what lps stands for. How would I be able to disable this on my K 40+? Detailed description and possibly photographs would be helpful. I too would also like to run my laser with the cover open for ventilation and being able to specifically see what’s going on. The glass [or whatever] on top of the K 40 is so dark you can’t see anything going on inside.
Thanks.

Thank you! The lid didn’t think it was closed!

Thank you. I taped that metal sensor down and it works!

Glad you’re up and running again… I will mark this thread solved.

LPS is laser power supply… many machines have a 24V supply and a high voltage supply for the tube. The lps is the high voltage supply – that’s all :tada:

You should wear eye protection, such as regular street glasses or eye protection from someplace like Home Depot.

Most are made of polycarbonate (police riot shields) and will block all emissions of the co2 laser, at least the IR… You should wear these anyway because the laser can pop a piece of material into your eyes…

Have fun – enjoy
