Hi all. I accidentally deleted my fully functional laser profile, and after readding it (and updating lightburn to newest version), I can’t figure out the solution to this problem. It all centers along using the move button.
Originally, when I would click MOVE DOWN 10mm, the laser wouldn’t move. I could MOVE DOWN click 5 times, no movement. If I clicked MOVE UP, the laser would move DOWN 10 mm. If I clicked MOVE UP 5 times, it would move DOWN 5 times, and only then could I click MOVE DOWN to move it back UP. I could only move it DOWN (by clicking UP) the same number of times I already moved it in the opposite direction. I think I solved this issue by changing the origin from bottom left to top left.
However now, I have a similar problem. After turning the laser on, I can click down to move it down, but I can’t move it up unless it is moved down first. If I click the move button many times, it will start responding with the wrong movement. As in, if I click move left 10mm 5 times, it might move down 50mm. If I click right, it might move up. Basically, the move button is not functioning in a predictable way. I took two videos of what is happening on my phone, because I know this is kind of hard to follow, and I also screen recorded my computer so you guys could easily see my settings.
What is odd, is this is not affecting the layout of my prints. They are NOT upside down, and they are not flipped left to right.
Here’s my setup:
Xtool D1 Pro
Lightburn 2.0.02
I have installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled the CH340 driver
I downloaded Laserbox to update firmware on my engraver, but it couldn’t tell me whether my firmware was up to date or not.
I downloaded the xTool-D1ProV3.lbdev configuration file from xtool.
I used that IBDEV file to import settings for my laser.
I am using GRBL and com 3 for my laser.
I don’t have any other laser programs open that could be trying to communicate with the laser.
Here’s a google drive with the three videos.
I tried to make them as succinct as possible, but it’s hard because the behavior doesn’t happen on command, it takes a minute or too for me to showcase the problem.
Restore an automatic backup of the LightBurn preferences from before the whoopsie:
That should restore all the myriad tweaks you’ve made to LightBurn. If everything now works as expected, you’re back in business.
If it’s still kaflooie, then something may have changed the Machine Settings in the controller. However, Xtool controllers don’t allow saving & restoring their configuration, because Xtool seems to regard changes as hostile action, so the next step may not work …
Try to restore an automatic backup of the Machine Settings from before the whoopise:
Write that to the controller and see if anything changes. If it’s still kaflooie, then some of the Xtool owners around here may be able to provide further help.
I’m not at home right now, but I am very excited to try this. I didn’t know that LB automatically saved backups! Thank you for your help, I’ll check back in and let you know if these fixes worked.
Still not home, but gosh, chatgpt has done me dirty on this. This all started because my laser wouldn’t test fire like it should, unless I was actively increasing or decreasing the power. Chatgpt said to fix it, delete profile and start new. Didn’t tell me to backup first (that is my bad as well). Deleting the profile threw me into this hours long ordeal where I couldn’t get the movement right and finally came here for help. And whats worse than that, I asked chatgpt if there were automatic backups saved.
It’s answer? No.
Gosh. I guess it’s a good tool for some things, but this has been a reminder that it’s definitely not without its flaws.
Hey there, sorry about the delay in my response, I’ve been out of town for work. I just checked my backups folder, and it looks like I only have two backups stored in “local/lightburn/backup/machine settings” and they were at 11:16am and 11:17am last sunday, from right AFTER I deleted and readded my laser. I’ve looked around the same file path and I’ve also searched my computer for file types “lbset” but I can’t find anything else. HOWEVER, in “local/lightburn/prefs” there are a bunch of files in there called “lbprefs.” Is there another place I should look, or should I try one of the lbprefs files?
At the same time I deleted and readded my laser last week, I also updated lightburn. Maybe that deleted all the backups?
Just loaded one from last saturday, 1 day BC (before catastrophe). It has the same odd behavior. I cant move the laser up until I move it down first. Can’t move it left, until I move it right first. I can only move it up the same distance I moved it down, and I can only move it left the same distance I moved it right. It’s like the laser is starting up thinking it’s in the upper left origin of the working area, even though I have never had it do this before.
what’s weird, is although the laser is acting like it’s starting out in the upper left origin, if I tell it to “go home” it moves all the way left before it hits the rail and I have to shut it off. So it’s behaving like it’s starting out in the upper left, but also, when I tell it to home, it goes left.
I also chose another prefs backup from months ago. Same behavior.
You can try out V 2.0 Release Candidates without affecting the V 1.7 setup, because they will import the current settings. Keep an eye on the Change Logs for improvements in handling Xtool’s jank and see if those improve your situation.
