I’m not sure what this technique or method would be called to search for it. If I had a smaller CNC like a 3018, could I cut a logo or something DIRECTLY onto a large wooden surface? In other words, I would have to remove the spoilbard and slide the spindle down as far as safe. Is this so bad an idea no one even talks about it ?
There are a couple reasons to use a spoilboard.
One is to create a level surface that you can use to reference your materials or to provide a solid surface for thinner materials.
Another is to prevent your cutter from hitting the frame of your machine.
That being said, there is no reason you cannot cut materials without a spoilboard.
I have a friend who makes large slabs and tabletops on his machine and they simply rest the raw materials on the frame of the machine.
