Organizing file list

Hello all,

I am wondering if there is a way to organize (re-arrange) the file list in lightburn?

We are a small manufacturing business with many anodized parts that we engrave our logo on. We also use the laser to cut foam for packaging said products. The laser that we are using is a boss LS1630 with the ruida controller. I am trying to keep the file list organized on the controller so my guys can easily find the file they need. Currently our file list looks something like this-
A1
A2
A3
A4
F1
F2
F3

Whereas the “A” files are anodized parts we engrave and the “F” files are for foam cutting. The problem I am having is once we manufacture another part and need to engrave them, the file is added to the end of the list. The list ends up turning out like this-
A1
A2
F1
A3
F2
F3
A4
A5 etc.

Is there any way to organize this list or at least have it order them alphanumerically? Thank you for any help

I believe lightburn doesn’t control the way the file list is displayed its a windows thing. Here’s what i would do. Put numbers in front of the name to sort them. This way they will all be grouped the way you want

Example:
1-A1
1-A2
1-A3
2-F1
2-F2
2-F3

I don’t believe there is. You can view the files on the controller and delete them from within Lightburn using the File List Window, but I believe that’s all you can do. I also opened RDWorks and tried to see if there were any options for this in there. I did not find anything.

I gave that a try and it still seems to just add the file to the end of the list. The list is still coming out looking like this-
1-A1
1-A2
2-F1
1-A3
2-F2
1-A4
1-A5 etc

One would think that this would be a standard ability. And or the ability to create folders would really help keep things organized.

When the screen is open Click on the Name field at the top of the column and it should sort them correctly

I believe he’s inquiring about sorting the files on the Ruida controller, not in Windows.

OK, guess i misunderstood. Wouldnt know anything about that. Thought he was talking about opening files in Lightburn. He did say “Organize File List in Lightburn” If i was right and it is Lightburn. Then the way files are viewed through lightburn are controlled by the operating system, not by lightburn. The functionality is the same as viewing files in Win Explorer. If he’s using windows which he didnt mention. You can do anything with files in lightburn you can do in windows. Rename, Cut, copy, Paste, Delete, etc

Sorry if I got the nomenclature wrong. Tim is correct, I am trying to organize the files on the machine. Or at least come up with a system that can keep all my files organized in such a way that my guys can easily find them without scrolling through the entire list.

You are 100% correct in this. I think it is just a misunderstanding of his initial question.

This is from his first post.

We will have to wait for him to come back and clarify.

Here is something that might work for you. In Lightburn you have access to the file list on the machine. It is much more easily scrollable than on the controller itself. There is a start button there. I have never used this feature, but I believe that will run the file from the controller rather than sending it again. Might be something to test.

The display on the controller is entirely up to the controller firmware, not LightBurn, and is rudimentary at best.

The firmware’s talents taper off pretty quickly:

  • List the files in the order they appear in the on-disk (in-flash) directory
  • Pick one of them to run / delete / check

Inserting a new file in the middle of that list lies well beyond its capabilities.

Well I appreciate all the input guys. Seems to me that the controller is as ednisley put it “rudimentary at best”. Im no programmer but giving people the option to at least order by date, alphanumerically, or simply user preference sure seems to be something that should be easily integrated. Ruida controllers have been around for how long and seem to be industry standard but wow what a difference compared to 3D modeling software. Maybe a good idea for someone else looking for a business opportunity.
