How do I get a picture to actually burn deep enough to get the image to come through on darker woods like Black Walnut or Cedar? It’s like it choose to burn great detail on some pieces and some come out like you did nothing more than set the wood on fire. Thanks so much for any help. I have an OMTech 150W CO2 that’ll be here tomorrow so I need to get this figured out quick…
150W is a lot of power to deal with when trying to get fine etch results on wood. Wood’s density varies across the materials, and the harder (and more moisture-containing) the wood is, the less a given amount of power input will have an effect.
You may want to try multiple light passes rather than one large pass. With so much power on tap getting good detail is hard, because the lower limit of power that the laser will fire at is already around 15 watts. If you were running say, a 40 watt tube, 10% power would be 4 watts, allowing for much finer control over power levels.
Now that makes since! I understand the effects of various woods and moisture content will affect how it burns or engraved but using less wattage never even crossed my mind! Thank you so much!! Any examples anyone has on settings for various woods would be greatly appreciated and what was developed from each. I’ll start building me a database with data from whoever can help out sharing experiences with various materials and settings. Thanks a ton!!
