Product development Research using trends is very methodical… sometimes one piece of information you “skim” in a nonsensical post will tie in to another in a different article in a more prestigious publication or source and lead you to a third and fourth …a pattern is then identified which leads you to a conclusion.
The information gained from the conclusion will aid in a head start on product development and make you the leader rather than the follower of products for sale in a tight market space.
First to market with a product when done properly will yield a greater monetary reward. Of course this only applies if you want to make money 
if not then it’s just for entertainment
