Hope this isn’t a stupid question but I need to ask. I just purchased this laser with the 150 mm x 150 mm lens and was wondering whether or not, for finer detail, I should be considering the purchase of a 110 mm x 110 mm lens to switch out when necessary - for smaller objects and finite detail Is it that big of a difference? And if so, where is a good source to purchase lenses for this Raycus fiber laser?
None of my lenses (I have 4) are marked with coverage, so I don’t know your actual focal lengths. These can be computed with numerous on-line spot size calculators.
DOF is depth of focus.
Focal length | DOF | Spot size (microns) |
---|---|---|
F420mm | 13mm | 50 |
F254mm | 4.7mm | 31 |
F160mm | 1.9mm | 26 |
F100mm | 0.74mm | 16 |
Pick your poison.
Adding the field size/scan length to Jack’s table, you have:
Field size | Focal length | DOF | Spot size (microns) |
---|---|---|---|
300x300mm | F420mm | 13mm | 50 |
175x175mm | F254mm | 4.7mm | 31 |
110x110mm | F160mm | 1.9mm | 26 |
70x70mm | F100mm | 0.74mm | 16 |
(The 150x150mm lens is an FL225.)
I have the F420 (300mm), F254 (175mm), and F100 (70mm) lenses, myself, which seems like decent steps for my 60W JPT MOPA.
Having the smaller fields can give you more detail, but I usually don’t have detail in mind when I’m changing lenses. The bigger deal for me is the trade between punch and span. If I’m doing a small object, a “shorter” lens puts the energy into a finer point, giving stronger effects. On the other hand, if I’m working on a Contigo travel mug, I’ll trade it being slower work for being able to get the whole thing in one setup.
As for where to get the lenses, honestly, I’m just as happy with the F420/300x300mm lens I got from Amazon as I am with the lenses I got with my machine. If you’re working with a fiber laser listed as being under 100W, I’d just go Amazon for convenience and decent price. I just looked for M85-thread F-Theta lenses, e.g. this Cloudray listing with various focal lengths (which is actually the listing from which I selected my long lens).
(I should note, just for the record, that I did get a set of 100mm stand off risers from Silent Mfg and this low-profile rotary axis from omtech in order to get enough clearance to use the F420/300x300mm lens on the Contigo travel mugs, but you’re looking to go to a shorter lens, so that’s not going to be an issue for you.)
