Hi, I have Max Speed set to 20000 mm/min (need high for CO2 engraving), I have Accel set to 1000 mm/sec, my Move Speed set to 10000 mm/min, I do not want to lower these settings, my problem is that when I do framing, the laser head moves to the point where it should start framing at insane speed and sometimes crashes in the frame, are there any way to reduce it and make similar to Move Speed? thanks
What controller are you using?
GRBL control board
I believe traversal moves will move at rapid rates which will be the same as your maximum speed. As far as I know there’s no way around that on GRBL controllers.
How is that those speeds are good for engraving but not good for rapid moves?
It is good for engraving but not good for moves, probably it actually never reaches max speed at engraving due to nature of engraving mechanic, also there is safe environment (closed lid) while I engrave, head moves in strict coordinates, no fingers inside the working area etc., anyway there are no problems while I engrave but problem with super high speed with traversal moves when the laser head may hit the frame pretty often… Would be nice to have an option to limit it
The controller uses the overscan distance around an engraving to decelerate the head to a (nearly complete) stop before accelerating it in the other direction. It traverses the engraving area at full speed.
In contrast, vector cuts require the head to change speed and direction abruptly at the end of each line segment. This is typically the source of “lost steps” as the motor cannot supply the torque required to decelerate and accelerate for those motions.
The “super high speeds” your machine uses push it beyond the limits of its stepper motors. While it’s your choice to configure a machine with settings beyond its ability, programs expecting the machine to behave properly will inevitably cause it to produce poor results.
Bonus: configuring proper speeds & accelerations eliminates future problems that will occur when you least expect them.
