Rotary axis build

Brand new to the forum (and laser world as well) Hello everyone!
Looking to build a rotary axis for 80 watt OMTech laser. Trying to determine what stepper motor to use (thinking NEMA 17 closed loop) but stepperonline needs speed and torque required but I really have no clue. Not looking to turn super heavy items. Thanks for any help! Jeff

I have an M80 chuck rotary for my fiber, I also use on my co2 that uses a NEMA23 motor.

Check what type of motor you’re using on the Y axes and use that. You have to plug it into the Y axes, generally… Too small of a motor, the motor driver will have to change it’s configuration … so keep them the same.

Good luck

Excellent idea. That makes sense! Thx

Beyond torque and speed, you have to choose the step angle:
1.8° per step (for 200 steps per revolution)
or 0.9° per step (for 400 steps per revolution)

The 0.9° is more desirable: engraving will be more precise (you will achieve higher DPI = lower line interval).

Here a tutorial:
