Absolutely. You are likely getting ALARM:2 in the console window.

Your idea to increase the Max Travel with the firmware values $130 or $131will work, but yes, there is a better way 
Temporarily disable the Soft Limits by entering this command in the Console window:
$20=0
Enable them again with$20=1
