When using the Preview to save the image I would like to know if the actual dimensions/scale are preserved?
I would like the image to be my canvas in inkscape.
In my image you can see that I have made a canvas size = to the Lightburn Project. However the imported Lightburn image is not the same size as the canvas. While I have a good bit of experience with Lightburn I am just learning Inkscape. While this may be something that should also be presented to Inkscape I would first like to know if the actual dimensions of the Lightburn image is retained? If possible I would like to use the Lightburn image as the canvas in inkscape (understanding this is an Inkscape procedure). Since I will be applying stickers (designed in Inkscape) to the object it is imperative the dimensions are exact, which is why I’m using Inkscape and not photoshop.
Please excuse my ignorance and I hope I explained my circumstance well enough to be understood.
Inkscape has a default “page size” that’s entirely unrelated to the imported design. You can resize the page to fit the design through File → Document Properties:
You can also set the default page size (and other startup settings), although the method seems to have changed since I last figured it out:
I’ve repeatedly swapped SVG files between both programs (and others), with the dimensions remaining exactly the same. Make sure LightBurn’s SVG Import DPI value is set correctly.
Thank you.
I clicked the Resize to Content and get this.
I guess the canvas doesn’t matter so please confirm or answer the following:
- I tried to use the measure tool to see the size of the object, however, no measurement is shown. It seems the measurement tool is greyed out and while it shows the measurement line it does not show a measurement.
- I have set the default measurement to MM everywhere I could find it but I still get units displayed in px. What am I missing?
- The fishing reel object is quite a bit bigger obviously. This is where knowing that the size of the outlined object (hang card for packaging) is the same dimensions as was exported from Lightburn. So I can be confident that sizing the reel to the outline will be in real world dimensions.
So, in this image would you say I can be confident that the Lightburn exported outline is accurate to real world dimensions?
Thank you very much. I have not heard from Inkscape so I very much appreciate you crossing program lines to address my questions. I will have to figure out how to chop off the bottom of the reel but that is something I think You Tube can address. I think I saw a “boolean” ability. I digress.
Thank you.

I do not use Inkscape or a workflow similar to yours, so I cannot address your questions about scaling.
I do know you cannot use the Measure Tool on a graphics image. If you want to measure to, or across, an image, you must convert it to a vector (Trace the image). This may help you with your measurement questions.
Ok. So, converting the drawing to Bitmap works to preserve exact dimensions.
Apparently Inkscape has a default import DPI of 96 so I created a bitmap of my project and saved as SVG at 96 DPI. All indications are that the dimensions have been preserved giving me a good template.
So, saving the project from the preview does not retain dimensions. One must convert to bitmap.
Thanks for your attention and suggestions.
IMO, Inkscape has terrible UI choices. Most likely, those tiny gray rectangles have tiny gray text inside. Picking a different theme may reveal them, as there seems no way to tweak them through the UI.
It’s switchable in the tools menu:
I think the overall unit-of-measure is set in the default document.
Trust, but verify: run through the whole process on cheap cardboard, then deploy a good scale. ![]()
Basically, once you batter the measurement tool into millimeters, see what it reports when you run through the whole process.
Always practice on cardboard until you’re confident you know enough for consistent results.
