Sculpfun S9 failing middle of engraving

I have a Sculpfun s9 that is failing on me sinds a couple of days. Never had problems with this set-up.
In the middle of engraving is just stops. The laser and board stay on but it freezes a a random position. Sometimes it stops after 15 min of engraving. somethimes it stops after 3 minutes.

I have the new S9 version with the S30 Board. I also upgraded with the linear bar and diy end switches.
I flashed the firmware to the newest version using mks lasertool (sculpfun-S30-12-26.bin) but still same issue.
Can someone point me in the right direction were to troubleshoot? Is it the board Is it cabling ? Software issue or Hardware issue?

When it stoppes i check the log and it ends with entry: 0x400806b8

I use “home on startup” but the laser stays at the same position after a fail. So maybe no usb issues or can it be the cable?

Usually, random breakdowns are caused by unstable electrical power or the USB connection. Another source is energy saving settings of the host PC. Check all of them to be sure. Exchange the USB cable and also change the power line, make sure there is no other device drawing much power / starting on the same line (I had one user where the laser always stopped when the kitchen fan went on).

Which log? The console window? Please show full output here. This looks like a controller crash then.

Auto home only is executed once LightBurn connects to the laser the first time. If LightBurn is running and the connection is not reset, there is no auto home. If you right-click on the devices button, this should trigger an auto home, I think.

I will try some different troubleshooting steps later tonight:

  • Different laptop (had some driver updates last week maybe issues is from usb loss)
  • Different USB cable
  • Different PSU maybe

If they all have same i will try a dedicated AC source (12 inverter) but powerlosses and dips are very rare here and i dont have any big equipment running besides a fridge.

My gues its controller crash. Is there any thing i can do about this? Besides firmware update.

Apart from firmware upgrade, there is not much to do. There is another USB driver that provides better stability for some people. You can find it here: Setting up the software - Diode Laser Wiki
And you might try the firmware from this page, if not already done: Firmware Update & Settings - Diode Laser Wiki I personally used those firmwares and they are known to work.

Finally, you can ask for a replacement and will most likely get one.

I ended up replacing main board with the Makerbase MKS DLC32 V2.1 just to be sure.

I got following up and running but i think the laser power is not calibrated correctly i gues. Is there a setting i need to change? I run some test with full power and i am not getting good results.

Homing and movement is working after inverting setting. Laser Fan is running.
I am running default firmware. Should i change to S10 firmware for the board or can i use the default firmware?

Check the firmware setting $30. It should be 1000 and the setting “s-value max” in LightBurn device settings as well.

If you have an MKS board, you could use FluidNC as firmware, which has more features and is more flexible to compile. But I think, the default firmware should basically work as well. I think I never used that one.

Both settings are set the to 1000. I used the settings from the old device.
Should the Sculpfun firmware run any better?
Also i have a 5a standard psu. I connected the 12v described as on your website.
The 12V connection remains, and only the signal pin is transferred.
The signal pin is on a 3 pin connect and the 12v is on the blue default pin

also i hear a sort off a bell. Before every start it pings a little bit. And the beginning of each lasering tends to burn a bigger dot when it starts.

It seems that power is okay but i only has fullpower on the beginning of the. The first mm of for example a thin line is burned at ful power. I also takes longer than before in my opinion.

I did not full get that. Do you have two power supplies running in parallel? Then make sure they share a common ground; otherwise, the laser control pin is floating, which could cause your uneven burn power.

I have it connected as in this photo from you website. I use the default psu only.

If i create a square in lightburn and burn it on something. The left bottom starting point is burned more than the rest of the square like a big dot for the starting point. Also i hear a small sort of a bell / rings when it starts there.

can i try the Sculpfun firmware on this board will that work?

The Sculpfun firmwares probably won’t work. Wait – maybe the S10 firmware will because that was quite a clone of the DLC board. Try that one first.
Then I have a configuration file for FluidNC on the wiki as well (but getting into Fluid also takes some time, it is a little different).

I tried the S30 by error. The laser would not stop burning on the same spot after starting up.

When i tride the s10 firmware from your site with the old backup the laser i running like before it seems. (i still changed the invert value from $3=4 to 3 because the laser was moving the wrong way.

Maybe i will try fluid nc later on but for now i am testing again.

Other than the two I captured, the parameters are nearly identical to my S30 Pro. I have $130=380 and $131=385. I believe what you have now should work without messing with GRBL parameters.

Focus on one problem at a time: Apparent low power. You are okay with $30, so how about the Min-Max power settings? Make a 50mm box, line mode and slowly review all the settings for that project. When you are happy with the settings, see if it will cut something like 3mm ply.
