Stepover for roughing bits

When using a roughing bit like the IDC Woodcraft Hog or Beast, I would like to run a high stepover. the Millmage Software only allows 50%.

I run an 80% stepover with these bits in Vectric. That is the settings right out of the IDC Woodcraft Database.

Due to some technical issues I’m not going to dig into now step-overs more that 50% left some undesirable results in MillMage. Until we have those resolved stepover is limited to 50%.

We will unlock that when we are able, but no timeline currently.

I thought normally never step over more than 30-40% or bit diameter?

In most cases that is true. When I do 3D carves, I set the finish pass with a tapered ball nose to 8% step over. But the first rough pass with a 1/4in roughing pass, I use 80%. That is the setting creates by the bit designer. I know people that use that same bit with a 95% stepover. And that is at a 3/4in depth. Even that CO’s compression bit is 70%. And that is just on my hobby machine. Something like the Phantom can push that bit more.

More than 50% can be really handy, especially when cutting foams, you may need to go almost 100% stepover. I am glad this is in the to do list
