Struggling with areas to not cut

I have bought some coasters to engrave text onto but I am struggling to do this.

I draw the coaster with the square shape and write the text. I then position /align the text which I don’t find easy!

I then want to cut/engrave the text and to ignore the coaster that I have drawn. Can someone tell me how to do this?

I’ve watched the lightburn tutorial on making a WiFi coaster but it is cut out and not engraved onto an existing coaster.

I have affinity graphics software and thought of creating the text in that and deleting the coaster frame. Trouble is that I would need to redraw the coaster in order to make sure that the text is correctly aligned.

If I am understanding correctly, put the text on a different layer, and turn the ‘output’ for the outline coaster shape to off. Alternatively use one of the tool layers as the outline

You have to assign the text and the “outline of the coaster” to different layers.
In the “cut/layers” window you can choose, wether a level is to be done or not; i.e. you have to disable “output”

Thanks. Simple, when you know how!

You can also use T1 and T2, which are Tool Layers. These are layer colors that will never be sent to your laser, and are designed to be used as rulers, guides, alignment tools, paths for text, image masking, and so on. They will never be sent to the laser, have no cut settings, and you can decide whether or not they are using when calculating job origin.

For example, if you often draw a frame around your design so you can center it properly, but set that layer not to output, you’d now make a tool layer set with ‘Frame’ enabled.
