If an item is selected, and the + is used to zoom in, center the zoom area on the item that is selected.
Currently, I zoom in, then I have to pan over to what I’m working on, then I zoom and then I pan.
Zooming on the item selected saves a few steps.
If no item is selected, then zoom on the canvas as before.

I found the suggestion area and added my suggestion to the hundreds that are there.
If you wouldn’t mind zooming out a click or two, you can have the selection fill the screen:
