Test fire to focus burns wood

Hi all. Brand new to laser engraving and just purchased an Ortur Laser Master 2. When I try to test fire the laser to focus, the beam comes out at full power, regardless of the power value I put in to the settings. I was going with 1% initially, but tried putting in values below that as well, but still had a full power beam that burned the wood immediately.

My laser power seems to be working correctly outside of this, as I can vary the power and see the change in the engraving when I have done some test engravings.

Type $$ in the console and press enter. Your controller will respond with firmware settings - copy those here so we can see them. The $30 setting should match the ‘S-value max’ setting in Edit > Device Settings in LightBurn. If they don’t match, you might get stronger output than expected.

Thank you. Please see below for the results of the $$ command. the $30 value matches what is in the device settings, so that doesn’t seem to be the problem.

Forgive me if I missed this, but this is where you are adjusting the “focus” power… right?

Yes, that is where I am adjusting it.

If it’s burning full power regardless of what you specify in the ‘Fire’ button value, you may have a defective laser module, or it might be wired incorrectly. Check the plug connections.

Does it matter that the power works appropriately when engraving, just not during test fires for focusing? I will check the plugs again.

If it’s working as you expect when engraving, with full power control, that would be very strange - the same commands are used to enable the beam for focusing.

I just retested it and it appears that the power does not act as expected with engraving. The earlier testing was on two pieces of identical clipart and the speed on one was inadvertently changed.

I have rechecked all of the connections and they are correct as shown in the manual.

I am having the same issue. The $$ command shows the same data as Johnd5. The very first 2 projects burned fine, but everything went awry on the 3rd project. Test Fire burns at full power, even with alternate engraving software such as LaserGRBL. When engraving a project, it does not burn the image, it burns the entire surface.

This would indicate you have an issue outside LightBurn. Please post your firmware settings for review. Type $$ into the Console, hit Enter / Return and post the entire result here.

Might I also add, during the 3rd project, the Ortur stopped functioning at about the 40% mark of the job completion. Restarted the job, made it to the 60% mark, then Ortur began burning continuously.

So have you checked the voltage as shown in the video? Result?

In my case, the issue was a faulty motherboard.
