What is causing my diode laser beam to 'split' like this

I’ve been engraving some powdered coated water bottles this morning with my creality falcon 10w diode laser.
Managed 8 of them just fine then number 9 came out ‘half done’. as in the laser didn’t remove enough of the powder coating.
I clicked ’ fire’ so i could see the laser beam and this is suddenly how it appears?!

its turned into a line, rather than a dot.
What happened?
I’ve pulled it apart and given it all a good clean, cant see any scratches on the lens.

Don’t know what to do!
Does anybody have any idea?!

I’ve never seen this but my first guess would be a bad (or dirty) lens. Did the machine come with an extra lens? One of mine had one in the little toolkit and it’s a small glass lens about 10mm diameter.

This is probably not a manual focus laser?

Hey,
Yes it did come with a spare lens and I did try replacing it too.
But I noticed that even with the lens off (I pushed the fire button to check) the beam looks exactly the same - the line is still there.

No, it is manual focus

What is this second light spot from?

It looks like you do not have air assist. Have you made sure the nozzle is also clean?

The spot your pointing to is the only one that should be there  that is directly under the laser. The line in front is what has appeared out of nowhere.
I do have air assist but I have removed the nozzle whilst trying to figure out what’s going on!
The line/light spill is still there even with all the lens & nozzles removed.
I’m thinking it refracting off of something internally maybe

10W, so almost certainly dual diode. Two diodes and two beam spots. No bueno.

You already removed the air assist nozzle and protective outer “lens” to see if it returns to normal. Which gets you into non user sevicable causes.

I’d say a lengthy and exasperating exchange with the Creality warranty claims dept. is in order.

My understanding is that a diode laser’s raw output is a line like your near-side spot. Makes me think an internal mirror or lens shifted or went walkabout.

I appreciate this cause this is exactly what I think too :face_exhaling: but was hoping someone would have a different answer haha.
Thanks very much. Currently waiting for a response from creality tech support :crossed_fingers:
