Which surface to etch - clear acrylic with black tempera

I have an Xtool 20W and I want to etch clear acrylic for edge lit displays. Should I reverse the image in software and burn the topside of the acrylic through the tempera OR should I burn through the acrylic and focus the laser on the lower surface with the tempera? Seems to me that doing the lower surface will result in the laser hitting a more consistent coating of paint (assuming it is well covered) and it would not need to burn through any imperfections in the paint job.
