Z axis offset problem

I have set the laser body height to 25mm off the bed as recomended by the manufacturer, so the home position of Z should be 25mm off the bed. Am I correct so far? So to work out the offset should be home + material thickness, am I correct.
When I start, the laser should move up the material thickness before cutting, my laser goes down.
Any thoughts please.

Does the laser has auto focus? Then it goes down until the probe activates. If not, you do not need to play around with offsets, because there is no defined distance from homing position to material height, usually. Ignore the height, just set it to the desired distance manually.

Thanks
This particular machine has the ability to have different offsets for each layer.
My previous machine woked fine with different offsets without having to move the head manually.

Need more details on your machine. But the Home Position is not the same as the Focus setting above the workpiece. When you home your machine the Z axis should go to its home position, wherever it is, determined by the limit switches. Then before engraving you move the Z axis to the recommended height above the work piece. If you have autofocus then that would be done after you home the machine and move the Z axis above the work piece.

Here’s a lightburn file that will determine the correct focus distance from the workpiece for engraving. It will draw a line at the original focus distance then move down and draw 4 more lines in 3 mm increments. Then it will draw another line at the original focus distance the move up and draw 4 more lines in 3 mm increments. Before you run this make sure your Z axis has room to move up or down at least 12 mm. You may have to remove your honeycomb bed and block the workpiece so it is in the correct position. The line with the smallest height is the correct focus distance for engraving on your machine

Thanks
I have come to the conclusion that this machine is different to my old one.
I had an accident with my old one so I replaced it with the same model, but this one is different. My machine is a Neje Max4 V2.
Had good results with my first one which you could set Z height using the offset. This new one you have to set Z heigh manually.
Oh well, we got there in the end. Thanks.
