Does anyone know how much current the 5V pin on an MYJG100W laser power supply can provide? I want to add a panel indicator light to my machine to show when the laser power supply is enabled (ex, right above the laser keyswitch). I’m guessing a low-power LED should be fine, but figured I’d ask around first in case someone has gone this route before. I can’t seem to find any in-depth specs for what the I/O ports can handle.
In case the question comes up: I specifically want to wire this into the supply instead of wiring it through the keyswitch. That way I’m also covered in the (likely incredibly rare) case where the keyswitch fails closed. From a quick probe with the multimeter the 5V pin is only active when the power supply is on so it seems like a perfect candidate for this use case.
This isn’t really documented anywhere that I can relay, but most of these have a 20mA limit on the 5V supply. It should be fine for an led of 20ma or less. Most led’s are under 20ma.
I’ve looked at the manual for this and AI’d the device, but it doesn’t mention what kind of current just states “has a 5V output that is typically used for digital signals.”
My laser has a separate laser power supply (lps) power switch and it glows when turned on.
Oof, sounds like wiring to the PSU is a good bet! Either way, I won’t use it as the sole safety. I have an email out to the supply manufacturer asking for the spec, but I’m not confident that I’ll hear a response. We’ll see.
The neat part is that it stays lit for as long as the power supply is energized. Takes about 7 seconds to turn off when the keyswitch is turned to off; must be some big capacitors in there. For reference: I measured the current draw at ~14.5mA to that indicator.
