1.5.01 Z home not working properly

Noticed that Z axis will home up on projects sometimes not all the time, but does not return to the up home position on materials test at all. This is causing the nozzle to go down past the material. Yes I stop it before it can actually hit the material. Any idea why?

OMTech Polar for machine.

Is this for the Polar? If so, how are you managing Z axis and setting focus in general? Are you using the new functionality in Edit->Device Settings?

hi i have just joined and saw your question sorry cant help with your question only just downloaded update. can i ask if you are using the software for 3d carving?

Yes the polar. I set 3mm offset for the ap lens and nozzle in machine settings and changed the Z axis in device settings.

From what I’ve seen neither material test or the camera alignment features respect material height settings. So no accommodation is made to adjust Z-height on either start or end of the job.

Yeah I see that, but as a tech I can deal with quirks like that. My wife on the other hand gets overwhelmed by the fact that it will do the job after setting focus distance automatically, but she has to remember to send the Z-axis home manually. Miss that one step and there goes the nozzle. It needs to return home on all axis positions. This eliminates the possibility of damage. The thing is that the Z-axis does return home sometimes. I wasn’t sure if there was a setting that I had missed or not.

From what I’ve seen no, but would like to be proven wrong. I have not seen Z return to focus position after a material test. Any pattern to that you’ve seen?

In any case I think these are oversights from a Lightburn perspective but not certain.

Yeah I think they just didn’t think of that. Hopefully they see this and fix it. I mean honestly they have done a good job on what’s in it so far. Told the wife I don’t mind paying for it when they stay on top of improving it. Just gotta get her on the level of watching the machine instead of being lazy and thinking nothing can glitch out!

Please have her look through some of the fires in the forum. These machines are not toys. The consequences can be deadly and happen extremely rapidly. Almost everyone has had some fire scare. When you catch it makes a big difference.

If she’s used to things like craft cutters she may have a false sense of security of worst case scenario.

Commodity laser machines have developed very rapidly in a very short amount of time and the whole experience is still very much a work in progress. Rough corners should be expected.
