3d illusion engraving

Have any of you done a 3d illusion engraving n 3mm basswood, using a Ray5 10 W?
I did a material test and it didn’t give me enough to go on. I converted the image to grayscale and set it to grayscale in the cut/layer screen. No setting I choose give me a useable file to engrave. Any help?

Try a non-grayscale image mode to see if that improves the results you’re getting.

Thank you. I set the image to grayscale in lightburn, and changed the image to grayscale in photoshop, but nothing changed

In LightBurn, you can change the Image Mode that will be used for the burn. Try some of the dithered methods to see if that improves the effect.

In PhotoShop change image to Black & White. In Lightburn “Adjust Image” to your satisfaction.
Also use Stucki in Lightburn. I am not familiar with your machine so you may not have Stucki as an option.

May take several tries so engrave a small version of your file.

I changed it to grayscale earlier, would black and white be better? I do have Stucki, I’ll try it. Thank you!

Thank you! I changed the image to black and white and adjusted the brightness and contrast, in photoshop.
In Lightburn I left it in pass through rather than going back to Stucki, ignored the preview screen and it’s looking very nice except I’m going to reduce the speed to 400 for the next trial

I think your speed is too high. I have a 60/50W CO2 Omtech laser.

Don’t think I have ever engraved anything faster than 300 and most of the time it is 250 to 275 mm per sec.

Lower your speed and increase your power maybe 10% each time you run a test image to see what your results are.

I lowered the speed to 100, which was too much. I’ll try 200 next time. It looks good, but went pretty deep this last try. I really appreciate your help!

I have the Longer ray5 10W. If the speed you are referencing is mm/min then in my estimation, you are engraving at too low a speed. Most of my engravings, after configuring with the material test, is in the 4000 mm/min - 6000mm/min range with a power of 90. The only time I use speeds that low is when I want to cut the basswood. Then I use 400mm/min and 4 passes.

Thank you for your help
